301 redirects mean that a web page has moved from one URL or location to another. This is called a permanent redirect or change of address for the website. 301 is a status code that shows when you try to go to the previous location. It reroutes the viewer to the new, correct website address when anyone tries to access the old one.
This is different from a 302 re-direct that is temporary, rather than permanent.
Here’s an example.
If you have Site A redirected to Site B, whenever a viewer types in Site A, they will be redirected to Site B.
Although it may sound like something that happens negatively, a 301 redirect can be helpful in bringing more traffic to your website. But you should leave 301 redirects to professionals because it can be risky and ruin your website’s ranking and stats completely if it is not done well by an SEO professional that provides this service regularly.
301 redirects can help with your page ranking because it keeps your URLs uniform throughout the internet and the different ways that it is cited. This means that if you redirect one site to another, the link juice (the boost in authority and trust of the website and/or pages) goes to the new URL and domain!
Here’s an example.
If you have Site A redirected to Site B, whenever a viewer types in Site A, they will be redirected to Site B. Site B will retain all of the important SEO factors and stats of Site A, making Site B’s own rankings rise up as well.
It’s similar to how if two companies merge, then Company A will bring along its assets and reputation to Company B and it will become a part of Company B instead.
It’s also important to do 301 redirects in the case of broken links that need to be fixed. If you have a broken link, it means that someone is linking to a broken page on your website and you are losing out on that precious website and traffic boost!
If someone is telling a friend to go to your restaurant… but they give them the wrong phone number or the wrong address, then that recommendation isn’t helpful at all for your business! We want to have all of our website links updated and accurate so that every recommendation (link) comes to our site. Lots of websites lose out on this because they fail to check the broken links and therefore, they lose out on important SEO results.
